He lived in Mexico for several years where his photographs were published in news and lifestyle magazines, national newspapers and displayed at art galleries and boutiques in Mexico City. Dirk lives in the Chinatown district of San Francisco, California. He shoots about 5,000 images per month at events for a diverse set of leading clients at more than 250 venues in Northern California, including business conventions and meetings, nightlife, bars, clubs, restaurants, lounges, hotels, art galleries, concerts, festivals, private parties, nonprofits. His work has been published in magazines, newspapers, and online. Dirk also shoots portraits for various beauty/glamour clients, offers a selection of ultra high-quality images from 35mm transparencies and prints to collectors and art buyers, and presents several hands-on educational seminars in photography-related subjects.
"I took up photography because painting took too way too long. I learned photography by doing it. I shot many thousands of slides with natural light in various remote places, including natural disasters such as volcano eruptions and sudden events such as guerrilla takeovers of cities. I truly appreciate the "f/8 and be there" school of photography, but my taste for danger is less than my need to express my visions, so my art is born in photojournalism and becomes portraiture. I believe all colors are to be saturated, that visual appeal comes from strong concepts and sharp contrast and that a series of simple photographs can tell a complex story. I have photographed many things, but I greatly prefer real people, not professional models or celebrities, enjoying themselves and living life their way. My best images come from those subjects who trust my vision and show their true selves. I reflect their beauty and energy back to them, adding a little sparkle of my own. Multiethnic people especially inspire me visually and often have fascinating stories about their cultural choices and personal identities."
